Chris Sievey


Died on 21st June 2010.  He was someone I  never knew or met apart from through his Frank Sidebottom alter ego.  I saw him play at the Cricketers pub behind the Oval, now sadly empty and squatted, in the mid 80’s.  I’d been led to Frank by a colleague who was a big fan, who, together with half the football team he played for, came to the concert.  I still have his début double LP in a gatefold sleeve featuring the hit single ‘Mr Custard; and a warning that it features ventriloquists puppets. (Little Frank seen in the photo opposite.  With a mixture of iconoclastic cover versions like Bohemian Rhapsody (leading to a whole EP on the magic of Freddie Mercury and Queen) Kylie and Like a Virgin to his Sci-Fi EP featuring tracks like Space is Ace and a cover of I’m the Urban Spaceman (I’m just reading Molesworth for the first timee and he would have appreciated Franks enthusiasm for space)  and his Christmas EP, ‘Christmas is Really Fantastic. ‘  As well as detailing the excitement of space and Christmas from our youth he also was very much of Timperley near Althrincham – his favourite team were Altrincham FC, the Robbins.  I’ll leave with 4 of his 6 all time great football chants:

0-0, 0-0, 0-0, 0-0, 0-0, 0-0, 0-0, 0-0 etc

Wemberley, Wemberley, it’s a great big place in London and they call it Wemberley.

There’s only one Referee, one referee, but there are two linesmen. (You can see how retrograde it has been calling them assistant referees as it doesn’t scan at all)
